《감각으로 읽는 도시》는 미로 국제 네트워크의 첫 번째 전시로, 광주 동구 미로센터 앞에 위치한 오래된 대중목욕탕 수미사우나(Sumi Sauna)를 기반으로 제작된 메타버스 전시 공간에서 개최된다. 일상의 공간이었던 목욕탕을 디지털 환경 속으로 재구성한 이번 전시는, 익숙한 장소를 예술적 탐구의 장으로 확장하며 도시의 미래와 예술의 새로운 가능성을 모색한다. 국내외 6인의 큐레이터가 선정한 20여 명의 작가들이 비디오, 증강현실(AR), 사운드, 인터랙티브 아트 등 다양한 매체로 참여해, 예술과 기술이 교차하는 새로운 감각적 경험을 제시한다.
가상 공간은 크게 목욕탕 공간과 사우나 공간으로 구성된다. 목욕탕 공간은 전시 뿐만 아니라 쇼케이스 기간 중 개최되는 국제 라운드테이블의 메타버스 현장으로도 활용된다. 국내외 큐레이터와 작가, 그리고 관람객이 아바타로 참여하여, 각자의 시공간을 넘어 실시간으로 토론과 교류를 이어간다. 이 공간은 실제 수미 사우나의 구조와 분위기를 재현해, 관람객이 익숙한 일상적 장소 속에서 새로운 인식의 전환을 경험하도록 설계되었다. 벽면의 거울은 ‘이동의 포털’로 작동하여 관람객을 전시 감상 공간인 사우나로 안내한다.
사우나 공간은 참여 작가들의 작업을 감상할 수 있는 전시 영역으로, 작가별 ‘사우나 룸’이 독립된 감상 공간으로 구성되어 있다. 비디오, 사운드, 증강현실, 인터랙션이 결합된 작품들은 현실과 가상이 공존하는 시청각적 서사를 형성하며, 메타버스 안에서 관람객의 움직임과 반응에 따라 유기적으로 변한다. “수미 사우나”는 단순히 작품을 전시하는 공간이 아니라, 지역의 일상 공간을 국제적 예술 플랫폼으로 전환하는 실험적 장이다. 도시의 시간과 기억이 응축된 근대 건축물인 수미 사우나는 점차 사라져가는 지역 생활문화의 한 단면이자 광주의 정체성을 상징하는 공간이다. 이 프로젝트는 그 장소를 디지털 환경 속에 복원하고 예술적으로 재맥락화함으로써, 광주의 문화자산을 보존하고 이를 국제적으로 확산하는 새로운 형태의 예술적 아카이브를 구현한다.
또한 본 프로젝트는 물리적 시공간이 변화하여 메타버스로 전환되는 과정에서 예술 생태계의 새로운 상호관계를 실험한다. “수미 사우나”는 예술, 기술, 커뮤니티가 교차하는 플랫폼으로서, 현실의 공동체적 감각을 디지털 상호작용으로 확장하고, 일상과 예술, 지역과 세계가 하나의 흐름 안에서 연결되는 새로운 경험의 구조를 제안한다.
Sensing the City is the inaugural exhibition of the Miro International Network, presented within the metaverse-based virtual space Sumi Sauna, a reconstruction of an old public bathhouse located in front of the Miro Center in Gwangju’s Dong-gu district. Reimagining an everyday site through digital transformation, the exhibition expands the boundaries of the familiar bathhouse into a platform for artistic inquiry, exploring the future of urban life and new possibilities for art. Curated by six curators from Korea and abroad, the exhibition features around twenty artists working across diverse media such as video, augmented reality (AR), sound, and interactive art, offering a multisensory experience where art and technology intersect.
The virtual space consists of two main areas: the Bathhouse and the Sauna. The Bathhouse functions not only as an exhibition zone but also as the metaverse venue for the international roundtable held during the showcase period. Curators, artists, and visitors participate through avatars, engaging in real-time discussions and exchanges that transcend geographical and temporal boundaries. The space faithfully recreates the structure and atmosphere of the original Sumi Sauna, allowing visitors to experience a perceptual shift within a familiar environment. Mirrors on the walls act as “portals of transition,” guiding visitors into the sauna exhibition area.
The Sauna serves as the main exhibition zone where visitors can encounter the works of participating artists. Each artist is assigned an individual “sauna room,” designed as an intimate viewing space. Through a combination of video, sound, augmented reality, and interactive elements, the works create a dynamic audiovisual narrative in which the real and the virtual coexist and respond organically to the viewer’s presence and movement. Sumi Sauna is not merely a venue for displaying artworks but an experimental platform that transforms a local everyday space into an international stage for contemporary art. The building itself, a piece of modern architecture embedded in the collective memory of Gwangju, represents a vanishing layer of the city’s lived culture and identity. By digitally preserving and recontextualizing this historical site, the project establishes a new form of artistic archive that both safeguards Gwangju’s cultural heritage and shares it globally.
Furthermore, this project explores emerging relationships within the artistic ecosystem as physical space transforms into the metaverse. As a platform where art, technology, and community converge, Sumi Sauna extends the communal sensibility of physical experience into digital interaction, proposing a new experiential structure in which everyday life and art, the local and the global, flow seamlessly into one another.
